The Charleston Jazz Orchestra to launch Ode to Billie Holiday

The Charleston Jazz Orchestra (CJO) launches its highly anticipated 2026 Season on February 7, 2026, with Ode to Billie Holiday, a powerful tribute celebrating one of the most influential vocalists in American music history. The opening concert features Charleston’s own Tonya Nicole, whose soulful artistry and commanding presence bring new life to the legacy of Billie Holiday—also known as Lady Day.

Widely regarded as one of jazz’s greatest vocalists, Billie Holiday revolutionized jazz, blues, and popular music through her deeply expressive style, shaped by jazz instrumentalists and marked by an unparalleled ability to convey raw emotion. Ode to Billie Holiday honors her courage, artistry, and enduring influence through a dynamic big band performance that blends music, storytelling, and history.

Following the success of her standout performance at the 2025 Charleston Jazz Festival, Tonya Nicole returns to the CJO stage with her signature blend of southern warmth and vocal power. Named Charleston’s R&B Artist of the Year 2024, Nicole’s voice glides effortlessly from velvety lows to soaring highs, creating an unforgettable concert experience. Her performance honors Holiday’s legacy while offering a fresh, contemporary interpretation rooted in authenticity and heart.

The concert will be led by CJO Director Robert Lewis, who guides audiences through the music with insight and storytelling, highlighting the significance of each selection. Many of the arrangements performed are original works by Charleston Jazz Orchestra musicians and cannot be heard anywhere else.

The performance runs approximately 90 minutes with no intermission and takes place at the historic Charleston Music Hall, a former 1849 train station known as the Tower Depot. From the moment patrons enter, they are immersed in Charleston’s rich jazz heritage—complete with lobby bars, welcoming ushers, and excellent sightlines throughout the theater.

This performance is made possible in part by MUSC.
